Networking becomes transactional when the relationship is valued only for what it produces.
• If I call you only when I need something, or
• if I lose interest when you cannot send me business, or
• if every conversation contains a hidden scorecard
We do not really have a professional relationship.
We have an exchange.

Knowledge, perspective, introductions and generosity matter too.
The irony is that when you stop squeezing every relationship for an immediate result, you often create the conditions where business referrals happen more naturally because trust has had room to develop.
