Your first goal should be understanding, not business.

Can I understand:
• who this person is professionally?
• what they do particularly well?
• who they serve?
• how they think?

And can they understand the same things about me?

Once that foundation exists, all sorts of possibilities become visible.

Without it, you are trying to manufacture referrals between two people who barely know what the other one does.

I think networking becomes dramatically easier when we remove the pressure to produce something immediately.

A successful first conversation can simply mean,

"I now know enough about this person to know whether another conversation makes sense."
