Likability gets you invited back.

Referability gets you introduced to someone important.

We sometimes confuse the two because we naturally prefer doing business with people we like.

But a referral carries more weight.

I need to believe you are capable, appropriate for the situation and likely to treat my client well.

You can be charming and still be difficult to refer because I do not understand your expertise.

You can also be quieter and extraordinarily referable because I know precisely where you shine.

Being pleasant matters.

But being clear, competent and trustworthy matters more when someone is putting their own reputation behind

your name.
