A bigger network gives you more possibilities. A better network gives you more confidence. Those are not the same thing. Ten thousand connections are impressive until you need a very specific professional for a very specific client and cannot identify the one critical person you need to trust. I would rather have access to the right 50 people with meaningful information about them than 10,000 names I barely recognize. Breadth matters because clients have varied needs. Depth matters because referrals carry risk. The goal is not small versus large. The goal is: Can your network produce the right person when the moment actually arrives?
