Specialists give our brains a mental hook.
If someone tells me they are an attorney, I have stored almost nothing useful.
But, if they tell me they specialize in estate planning for families with special-needs children, I immediately understand a situation where their name matters.
That does not automatically make them better than a generalist.
But, it absolutely makes them easier to remember and easier to match.
Referrals are essentially a matching exercise.
The more distinctive the pattern, the faster the match.
Expertise matters, but so does the ability of other people to recognize where that expertise belongs.
